Image Consultant NYC :: Who is Coco Chanel?

“A girl should be two things, classy and fabulous” – Coco Chanel

These are words are striking, and the woman who spoke them is unquestionably one of the most exceptional women in the fashion industry. You see items from her collections everywhere. From makeup and perfumes to accessories and attire, Chanel is one of the most prevalent names in the high end of the fashion world. We all know her creations are stunning, but it’s time that we take a step back and reflect on the brilliant woman behind the formation of such a tremendous brand.

Gabrielle "Coco" Bonheur Chanel was an immensely talented French fashion designer and founder of the popular Chanel marque. Her mother passed away when she was only six years old, and she was placed in an orphanage where she was taught to sew by a group of nuns. This is when her passion for fashion was born. Although her childhood years were less than glamorous, her heart was full of charm. Chanel followed her dream, and opened her first shop on Paris’ Rue Cambon in 1910 where she began selling hats. She later went on to open more clothing stores in France, and by the 1920s, she had launched her first fragrance, Chanel No. 5, and introduced the legendary Chanel suit and her timeless little black dress.
This remarkable style icon’s designs were groundbreaking for the time—using fundamentals of men’s wear and accentuating comfort over the restrictions of the then popular fashion items. She encouraged women to put the days of uncomfortable corsets and tight tie-up dresses behind them.
Throughout the trials and tribulations of her life, such as broken hearts and the great depression (which caused her to take a break from her beloved work), her integrity rose above it all. At the beautiful age of 70, she made a victorious return to the world of fashion, and her designs continued to capture the hearts of consumers all over the world.
Although Coco Chanel sadly passed away in 1971, her sense of comfort, mixed with chic and elegant designs, have continued to live on in the lives of women everywhere. Her fascinating stories are still talked about faithfully, and her legacy remains prevalent in the ever-changing world of fashion. Her story made it all the way to Broadway, where the musical Coco was performed starring the talented Katherine Hepburn, and about ten years after she passed, designer Karl Lagerfeld made the smart decision to carry on the Chanel legacy. Undoubtedly, her designs are some of the most wanted, glamorous, and well known in the fashion world today.

Let's Talk About Accessories

In today’s fashion world, accessories can speak louder than clothes. Why? In simple terms, they tie everything together. Accessories make an outfit whole.

Picture it--- a crisp pair of dark pants below a gorgeous flowing blouse. Beneath the pants is a pair of pumps just waiting to walk the city streets.  While this image may seem quite enticing, some key pieces are missing. Where’s the handbag? Where’s the jewelry?  And more notably, where are the essential accessories to protect you from the frosty air?

First, one of the most important accessories is quite obviously the archetypal, classic handbag to accent the ensemble. Handbags visibly reflect a woman’s style and fashion taste. The perfect handbag is often considered a more obligatory accessory over belts, jewelry, etc. Remember, a handbag can easily be replaced by the right size clutch, wallet, or wristlet if you don’t want to carry a larger bag.

Jewelry, however, does take a very close spot next to the handbag in regards to significant accessories. Picking precise jewelry to match an outfit is vital.  The right watch or bracelet, or clever combination of the two, can compliment any arm’s length of a shirt or sweater. Don’t be afraid to wear more than one wrist piece at a time- they can complement each other remarkably. Go to a store and play around with different options, and figure out what works best based on your wardrobe. For the fancier events, as we all know, diamonds truly are a girl’s best friend. Plus, a diamond necklace will sparkle up an elegant dress like no other piece of jewelry can.

Finally, don’t forget the imperative accessories for each season. Right now, faux or real leather gloves, faux or real fur coats, chunky infinity scarves, classy knit hats, and legwarmers will add the right amount of detail to your chic wintery look. Plus, they’ll keep you toasty on the coolest of days.
